My FIRST Driving Lesson! 18

  Daily Life, Me, Myself & I.

Before I start, congratulations Ivy for releasing her new Wordpress theme! :razz:

Nanyate.com Nanyate.com by Ivy
Ivy’s busy schedule didn’t keep her away from designing a Yukata-inspired Wordpress theme for her blog. I must say that she had a excellent grasp of colour theory - she mixes pink and blue, the two unseemingly cooperative colours, so well in her new theme. She uses PNG alpha transparency to give her content and sidebar containers a unique transluscent texture over the dark background - and I love it! Although it doesn’t work well for people using IE6 or below, I believe she’s made the right choice. You should really just dump IE6 for something more performative like Firefox or Safari. Wake up!

I salute Ivy’s bid to make all her designs blind-friendly, XHTML and CSS 2.1 valid. Kudos for going that extra mile, Ivy!

My FIRST Driving Lesson!

Well, I can say that it’s a total nightmare! The driving instructor, a very nice lady, called up yesterday to say that she’ll coach me for two hours today. Just arrived at 3pm, picked me up from home and took me to a rather busy industrial area and taught me the basics of driving. This is probably when I start to hate manual cars - in the past, I only know that what sets manual and automatic cars apart is that one requires you to chnage gear when stepping on the clutch while the other does it for you automatically (well isn’t that obvious from it’s name).

Driving a manual car requires a long attention span, a whole lot more patience and a sturdy feet. You’ll need to step on the clutch real hard to change gear - the car I was being coached in was in a dire condition and I’ll need to step on the clutch real hard to change gear. Thus the car stalled twice when I didn’t muster enough strength for my weakly left foot. When you are about to start, you’ll have to step on the clutch (Step on it hard!!! I kept reminding myself), switch from whatever gear to the first, tap the accelerator slightly (for that cranky car the accelerator was out of it’s mind and upon the slightest touch the car was revving up like crazy), release clutch very very slowly (or the car will stall) and there you go.

The instructor kept her foot on my left foot because she said I’m not stepping hard enough. Well I should be more gentle with your car I thought. I screwed up the sequence at the first left turn and the car stalled again - I stepped on the brake too hard and when I was about to start again, I forgot to step on the clutch to switch back to gear one. Grrr. She told me the sequence and I repeated it to myself, doing it every single time I make a turn.

And then since it’s 4pm already, the nearby school has it’s classes all over and those short little primary school kids are running across the road like, what mom describes, monkeys on the loose. My hands immediately broke out in cold sweat for fear of running over an innocent, roaming seven-year-old even before completing my first ever driving lesson. And when I braked too hard, the car will stall again (because of the damn clutch!) and I’ll have to repeat the sequence to myself like a madman.

The lady instructor, albeit being a very patient and helpful lady, insisted that I should go try the expressway (I was like, WHAT?! It isn’t even 30 minutes into my FIRST time driving something that moves - besides my bicycle, that is). I couldn’t say no. I was so nervous to forgot to apply the brakes even when we approach those irritating, rough, and badly-placed road humps (the local town council gained notoriety for building too many road humps back then) and the car felt as if it’s going to freaking fall apart. Luckily it didn’t.

On the expressway, the cars behind me were either tailgating me dangerously (I wish I could brake, have them smash into the car and get them to pay my instructor to get a better car that has more foot-friendly clutch) or overtaking me and then staring back me at like I’m in a zoo exhibition container. Whatever. And when the instructor told me to change gear (because I was going over 40kmph at the third gear), she pusher her finger against my cheeck and said, Don’t look down, try changing gear without looking at it. I was so mentally-unprepared! Luckily she guided my hand with hers and the transition went on smoothly… until when we started to climb up this flyover when the engine starting coughing and the whole car started to jerk.

After the flyover she asked me to pullover at the road shoulder and found a loose wire in the engine. She fixed it but offered to drive me back, saying that it’s enough training already… and I was only an hour into the two hour course. Okay so before dropping me off at my gate she told me that the next lesson will be at 7.30am next Wednesday and I was like WHAT?! 7.30am?!

One good thing that came out of it - I’ve learnt to drive, a little :razz:

Note to self: I still owe Hendra a Photoshop tutorial! I’m sorry for being so late, but I’m busy lately. Give me a little more time yea?

    OMG!! thats one hell of a first lesson especially when driving with a manual. I can’t believe she made you go on the expressway- on your very first lesson. Crazy lady!
    Even though manuals are more difficult to learn with, you’ll appreciate it in the longterm. Its more enjoyable and changing gears will become second nature, trust me :wink:

    @Nel:
    Yea, I was shocked when she asked me to get on the expressway! In my country (infamous for having reckless, careless, rude and thug-like drivers), expressways are kind of out-of-bounds to new drivers because you’ll most probably get honked or tailgated all the way. Miraculously I didn’t hear any drivers sound the horn, although I got more than a handful of angry stares.

    You’ve said exactly the same thing as my cousin - manuals are a joy to drive when you’re on road trips because you get some fun out of the gear transition part. For automatic cars you’ll only have to step on the accelerator, which can make you sleep!

    Whoa!!! Expressway on your first lesson is a little quick, don’t you think?! Which highway was it? The Sunway-Ampang one? And was the car a kancil? LOL!! I heard it was quite hard to drive the kancil since it has not powered steering wheel. Hahaha. You know, I’m a couple years older than you and I have never taken a driving lesson in my entire life. LOL! Knowing my personality though, I’d be quite reckless on the road. The world is definitely safer without me driving. Hahahaha!!!!

    On another note, thanks for featuring me. And thanks for the offer for the screenshot from IE6 but don’t worry about it. :) To fix for IE6, I will need the actual program in front of me to madly refresh after every line of code. LOL! I’ll go to the school’s library sometime. They have an FTP section over there and they run on IE6. So, I will be able to code and design fine there. It’s just a little busy right now with everyone studying for exams. So, IE6 will have to wait. :)

    @Ivy:
    It’s the New Pantai Highway… it was opened two or three years back I think :) the car was a Kelisa, and it had a hard time climbing that gentle ramp on the flyover, lol! In Malaysia learning how to drive is quite essential because the public transportation system simply sucks biiiig time (I once waited 30 minutes for a train which was announced to arrive in less than 5 minutes when I was at the platform). The buses are always packed as well, and arrive at unregular time intervals. I think you won’t be too reckless! Haha :) you’re a nice person afterall, in Malaysia you’ll be an angel on the road. Believe me, heh.

    You’re welcome! I think your design worth a mention because it’s so new to me that a theme uses PNG transparency. I’ve never really thought of using 1px PNG images, tile them up to form a transluscent background… brilliant idea! Anyway, good luck with the IE6 styling!

    When I had my driving lessons about a year ago, it was at 7:30 in the morning as well. And it was terrible because I was required to tip the teacher, you know, for cigarette money. Grr..
    I’m glad that you learned something out of your entire driving experience! You’ll get the hang of it eventually. =)

    And Ivy’s layout is just phenomenal! I was so glad to be the first to comment on her blog. (Suck up much? Not really. =P) Haha!

    Was this in Indo or Singapore?

    @Id:
    Oh. The tipping part. Well when I sit for my exams, the examination fees includes tipping as well, if I’m not wrong. Tipping is almost mandatory if you want to pass.

    Yea I agree, Ivy’s theme is a blast!!! :razz: I wanted to be the first but lol I’m out of luck.

    @Ivy:
    I think it’s in Indonesia… since I think that Singapore is quite free to such social malaise.

    @Ted Yup, that’s right, Ted. This whole thing took place in Indo. I highly doubt driving instructors would do such a thing. I think it goes without speaking that it’s one of the no-nos in Singapore’s many many laws. =P

    @Ivy I had to drive around the area of Hotel Dharmawangsa, and then after a couple days, I had to go down the Sudirman road. Freakishly scary, but fun, in hindsight.

    Sudirman is suicide! (Alliteration somehow intended.)

    Agreed! I’ve roughly Googled for the road’s name and OMG the traffic there is so congested! That is definitely suicide for first time drivers! :shock:

    that’s definitely different from here. I’m still waiting for my birthday’s arrival. Haha. but well, maybe people there are eager to drive, so as you drive on the expressway, you earn much more confidence and experience? Haha.

    But all the same, learning to drive should be cool. But well, they say, a few years into driving and it’ll be a drag. So enjoy it while you can.

    And as for her cranky car. Well, uhh, leg muscles? Haha. No solution. But definitely lots of problems.

    @jason:
    I’m wondering what’s the age limit over there for driving? It’s currently 17 in Malaysia, but I’ve heard that the government is pushing it a little higher to 21 in the near future. I wasn’t actually looking forward to driving:
    1. Mom will treat me as her enslaved driver
    2. My brother will soon follow my mom’s footsteps
    3. Dad will complain that I’m too slow when I drive
    4. I’ll be another of the billions of sinful carbon dioxide emitters around the world!!!

    I remember mine. the horror. at first, everyone is going to hate manual. but after a while of getting used to it, you might like that stick shift. I personally like stick shift better than an auto but I dont have a manual at home. ah, never mind. stick shift requires more focus then an auto, especially for new drivers.

    like you, my driving instructor told me to drive in the expressway in the first 15minutes of the class! I was chocked a little but I was fine with it. he said that I was a very quick learner. hehe. well, I’ve drove an auto, a few times before that. I was so eager to get my driving license and be freee! LOL.

    @thecoffeesnob: Oh yes, that’s the word! Gung ho :razz: anyway thanks! I hope I’ll get the hang of it after a few more hours of practise.

    @Michelle: My car stalls everytime I reach a junction because I brake so hard that the car comes to a complete stop and I forgot to revert to the first gear.

    @Aisyah: Manual is very, very troublesome indeed. But I guess changing gears will make driving less boring! I told my mom that I would want to get a manual car next time and she told me that rarely any car nowadays are manual. Hmmm. Yea the stick shift needs a lot of attention from me! I can’t stop looking at it when I was changing gears but my instructor pressed her fingers on my cheeck to stop me from looking, haha! Expressway was insane, but for that day the usually impatient drivers are exceptionally kind to my slow car. I’m about a month away from getting my real license!

    That is quite some experience huh? Things are different here, people are much more friendly on the road, with the L sign in your car, you’re basically the king, hehe, everyone gives way. =)

    I took quite a long time to pass my test (yes, last week, haha) and I am glad that I don’t need to fiddle around with manual cars anymore, wee! =D

    Good luck dude! =D
