A few days ago “IE6 Must Die” was one of the trending topics on Twitter, so popular that it trends above “Michael Jackson”. The inspiration name for this poster came from this URL: http://idroppedie6.com/and the lightbulb came on – I saw ‘die6′ in the URL. Intentional or not, it is a very interesting word combining ‘die’ and ‘IE6′.

DIE6 - A typographical poster
Inspiration

The poster which I got my inspiration from
In the midst of creating this poster, I chanced upon a great typography-based article posted by Smashing Magazine, Lessons From Swiss Style Graphic Design. I’ll spare you the background story of that amazing type of design – you’ll have to read the Smashing Magazine article – but the inspiration for the background with increasingly darker shades of the same base colour came from one of the posters showcased.
This poster isn’t strictly a swiss style design due to the lack of geometrical arrangement of elements though. Of course, that poster on the right is one of the best typographical examples around – carefully considered font sizes and colours to show the hierarchical relationship between different elements. Mine isn’t a very good example, but I hope it’s a good start.
If you have any suggestions on how can I improve on the poster, feel free to leave a comment and say so :) I’ve been reading up on typography a lot recently, and a few tips will definitely help a lot.
Typeface
The typefaces in the poster are Colaborate (by Ralph Oliver du Carrois) for the ‘DIE6′ header plus smilies/frownies, and Aller (by Dalton Maag) for the rest.
This is the second typographical poster I’ve made. The first one was for my university’s environmental club – the poster was titled greeNTU.

Nice poster! I’m feeling impelled to spread the poster around…
Can I, Can I?
XD
Why not? Just go ahead :D it’s released under the Creative Commons Attribution-Noncommercial-Share Alike 3.0 license.
oh wow. I love the typography poster. wooot! and, dare I say, Teddy, that I believe you are highly talented in graphics design.
The real site is here – http://www.die6.co.uk
@Aisyah: Thank you! Nah, it’s just a flash of inspiration. It just struck me and I thought I will only do good if I join in the IE6 lynch mob, heh.
@Ant Hodges: Thank you. I discovered yesterday that there is already a DIE6 movement, started a week ago, on the Internet. That doesn’t matter – what really matters is we push for the downfall of IE6 :)
LOL – the DIE6 movement started well over a week ago. One example is .NET magazine mentioning it in February 2009
Here is .NET’s article – http://www.netmag.co.uk/zine/discover-culture/calling-time-on-ie6
I love it :P It echos my thoughts exactly! Die IE6, DIE!
hehehehe…long live firefox?!?! ;)
have a great weekend ahead
nice poster! my clients/programmers here should see this poster xD There’s nothing I can do anymore to stop him checking in IE6. It’s really pain the a** to fix all the css bugs ><"
I love the posters, Teddy. It’s pretty ironic, because me and Dan (via @sobitchin) via Twitter, were just discussing the perks of IE. I definitely agree with the different browser alternatives. :)
Ps. What plugin do you use for the Twitter ID field via comment form?
Hah! I absolutely love it. You’re exceptional @ typography posters! You are inspiring me to make one as well. :)
Love the concept too, btw. Booo IE6! Firefox ftw. :D
been some time i came to your blog tedddymon :P i think i should update mine as well XD
you are still the gayest guy :P
@Chien: Thank you! Yea, IE6 has reached its expiry date. Time to at least upgrade to Internet F@#$ing Explorer 8, or get a better browser.
@med: Yeap! Although Firefox is not the only alternative, it’s one of the better ones. I’d recommend Chrome for those who’re looking for speed and efficiency.
@Angels: Thank you! Yeap, everyone should learn that IE6 is a 1990s browser. There is simply no reason why should we still continue to support IE6. It’s such an old browser that is rigged with bugs. And Hillary Clinton is being a big dumbo for claiming that Firefox is too “expensive”. She conveniently forgot that Firefox is for free. I hate using conditional comments and other ‘layout’ hacks to fix things in IE6 (or IE7), because they’re not standards compliant and complicates the layout. They’re absolutely uncalled for if IE is a well-coded browser.
@Brandy: The perks of IE, haha! Everytime when I strike up a conversation with a designer, one of the topics will definitely the pains of coding for IE6. Working with IE6 is like sitting on a nail-studded chair with a big fat cucumber up one’s butt. For the Twitter ID field, the plugin used is WP Twitip ID by Andy Bailey. One good thing I love about this plugin is that once you’ve associated your Twitter ID with your email, it will automatically add the Twitter ID to your comments without any additional tweaking – i.e. to make your twitter ID displayed although you’re an author/admin, simply logout, leave a comment with an email you’re using, and the Twitter ID will be associated with all your comments.
@Latrina: Thanks for the compliments, Trina :) I can’t wait to see your rendition of a typographical poster. IE6 should just fade away and die. People should be made aware that there are lots of better options out there, like Firefox, Chrome, Safari and Opera (all of which are completely free-of-charge) – so that’s why I’m totally not buying Hillary Clinton’s comment that they’re not making a swtich from IE because “Firefox is expensive”. Fail!
@Chongx: LOL! Glad to see you today! It has been a long time since we met each other… that was like 3 months back!
That poster is amazing. I love the humor in it as well. Your work is fairly simple, yet I’d never be able to duplicate or imitate anything that you create. Awesome.
die6!!
