Episode 03 - The Phone that doesn’t Ring (鳴らない、電話)

Shinji takes out the garbage

Instead of the open-air garbage disposal area, they’ve made it cleaner by using covered containers in the remake

Shinji walks to school

At the same time, Ritsuko calls Misato and talks about Shinji’s personality - Misato remarks that although she gave him a mobile phone, nobody ever calls to his phone and he never carries it around - a tell-tale mark of his inability to communicate with others. Shinji crosses a pedestrian bridge in the remake, instead of walking alone along a deserted stretch of road.

Along the way to school

Shinji is seen with his SDAT player this time in the remake version, as he travels down an escalator. In the original anime, a close of shot of his face is seen as he continues his journey to school.

Rei is just as lonely as Shinji

As Shinji enters the classroom, he is shown looking around the room, and the scene cuts to where he sees Rei sitting alone at her desk, looking outside the classroom window.

The only obvious difference in this scene is where the strap is tucked underneath Rei’s uniform collar in the remake, instead of simply over the collar in the original anime.

Lock bolts released to hide skyscrapers

Significant changes to the dynamic lighting effect is extremely evident in this screenshot. As you can see, huge surface area of the lock bolts have been shadowed (although this reduces the contrast, it’s more realistic). A very subtle change is that the speed limit sign and the no waiting sign has swapped positions And the stop light is finally red and not yellow.

‘Sinking’ skyscrapers at Tokyo-3

Skyscrapers of Tokyo-3 being moved to the underground compartment. Although not obvious in a still image, they have revamped the entire ’sinking’ sequences because they’ve extensively used three dimensional effects (visible in the YouTube trailer I’ve plugged earlier).

Rotating lock bolts retracting

This time they’ve added a wire gauze between the street and the lock bolts. Maybe because they don’t wnat people falling insde or something.

The 4^th Angel

The 4^th Angel changes from its horizontal position to its vertical, combat-ready position. Note the significant difference to the appearance of the Angel - it has now obviously twitching bone-like legs and its eyes are differently positioned.

Toji and Kensuke - Shinji’s classmates

For the remake they’ve slightly altered Kensuke’s hair colour, making him a brunette now, and that they’ve added warmer colours to their skin tones. Besides that, they’ve removed the line shadings on Toji’s face and replaced it with soft pink (not visible in screenshot).

Countdown timer

The countdown timer appears whenever the active Evangelion unit is disconnected from the main power supply - it’s internal battery can only sustain movement for another 5 minutes. I particularly adore this scene in the new film this time because they’ve taken lighting factors into consideration, and more importantly, used the famous loading icon from the new generation of Web2.0 awesome.

Death of 4^th Angel

In the original anime, the Angel was killed and it’s body preserved in a comparably complete condition which allows for further research to be conducted on the Angels (and their S² Engines). In the remake, all Angels pop into a rain of blood after being killed - thus only it’s tentacles remain.
